The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) is a premier non-profit organization at the forefront of the fight for global health equity. Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, its mission is dedicated to addressing infectious diseases and other health burdens that disproportionately affect impoverished and marginalized populations worldwide.

The Society fosters a diverse, international community of over 2,700 members. This network includes scientists, clinicians, public health professionals, and students from across the globe—North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa—who are united by a shared commitment to research, healthcare delivery, and education in tropical medicine.

A Legacy Forged in History

ASTMH was formed in 1951 through the merger of two pioneering societies: the American Society of Tropical Medicine (founded in 1903) and the National Malaria Society (founded in 1941). This union created a powerful, consolidated voice dedicated to scientific discovery and improving health outcomes in tropical regions, a legacy that continues to drive its work today.
